A Christmas Carol begins performances tonight at Alaska Center for the Performing Arts.

Arlitia Jones and Michael Evan Haney's adaptation of Charles Dickens' classic novella follows Ebenezer Scrooge, played by Kevin T. Bennett, and his transformation from grumpy humbug to passionate philanthropist after a series of otherworldly visits from the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future. Tom Robenolt directs.

"A Christmas Carol tells the truth about us in a very fundamental way," said Jones. "Deep down we are kind and generous and our need to receive love is as strong as our need to give love. I think we all have a Christmas Carol moment in our lives."

The creative team includes Kristen Vierthaler (choreography), Lucy Peckham (sound and music design), Art Rotch (set design), Becky Lasky (costumes design), Jim Sale (lighting design), and Chris Schweiger (stage management).

Performances run through December 29.
