The Gift Horse begins performances tonight at New Repertory Theatre at Arsenal Center for the Arts.

Lydia R. Diamond's play follows Ruth, a successful teacher and artist, whose quick and easy wit masks a painful childhood. With the support of her best friend Ernesto and therapist Brian she finally confronts her tumultuous past.

Obehi Janice stars as Ruth. She is joined by Cloteal L. Horne as Jordan, Maurice Emmanuel Parent as Brian, Zachary Rice as Noah, Alejandro Simoes as Ernesto, and Lewis D. Wheeler as Bill. Jim Petosa directs.

"New Repertory Theatre is delighted to present the Boston-area premiere of one of playwright Lydia R. Diamond’s earliest works," said Petosa. "When I first approached her about a project, she suggested a revival of The Gift Horse. The result is a heartfelt and funny play that shines with Lydia’s unique humor and wit."

The creative team includes Jon Savage (scenic design), Alberto Segarra (lighting design), Penney Pinette (costume design), and Dewey Dellay (sound design). Brian M. Robillard is the stage manager.

Performances continue through May 14.
