Bette Midler got a birthday surprise following Friday night's performance of Hello, Dolly! at the Shubert Theatre. The Tony-winning Broadway dame turned 72 on December 1 — an event her fellow cast members couldn't let go by without some pomp and circumstance. Midler leads the cast as matchmaker Dolly Levi opposite David Hyde Pierce as Horace Vandergelder. She will end her run in Hello, Dolly! on January 14, 2018, with Bernadette Peters taking over the role beginning January 20. The final performance will benefit the Actors Fund. The show's original Broadway cast recording was nominated for a 2017 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album.
