Flashback Friday: Judy Garland Launched Decades of Merry Little Christmases

The MGM star first performed the song in the musical film ”Meet Me in St. Louis”.

Christmas is only a little over a week away — which means, between department stores, shopping malls, and your holiday radio stations, you've probably heard about 10,000 renditions of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." But make room for 10,001, because, without a doubt, Judy Garland's original performance of the classic tune is the most underrepresented version of every yuletide season.

Garland introduced Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane's song to the world in the 1944 MGM film Meet Me in St. Louis, making it the classic Christmas tune it is today. So if you want a soothing lullaby to help you coast through the final days of advent, set this one on repeat — and have yourself a merry little Christmas.
