Flashback Friday: James Monroe Iglehart Sings "Make Them Hear You" at #Ham4Ham

Watch this soon-to-be ”Hamilton” star perform the inspiring ”Ragtime” ballad.

In this clip from an early #Ham4Ham (the free stage door performances and live lottery drawings that Hamilton offered for its first months on Broadway), Aladdin's Tony-winning Genie surprised the crowd with an a cappella rendition of Ragtime's "Make Them Hear You." Iglehart introduced the number saying that he used the Ahrens & Flaherty tune as his audition song when he was starting out as an actor and that it "helped him get a lot of work." (Evidently the song was able to work its magic for Iglehart again, because he's recently been announced to star as Hamilton's next Marquis de Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson.)

"I thought it was kind of apropos to sing here," said Iglehart before launching into the powerful ballad, gesturing to Lin-Manuel Miranda while performing the inspiring lyric, "Your sword can be a sermon or the power of the pen."
