Hamilton producer Jeffrey Seller officially announced today that Michael Luwoye will take on the title role in the hit Lin-Manuel Miranda musical on Broadway.

Luwoye, who is currently playing the role at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre in Los Angeles, will succeed Javier Muñoz at the Richard Rodgers Theatre starting January 16, 2018. Muñoz's last performance as Alexander Hamilton will be on January 14. Luwoye originally made his Broadway debut as Muñoz's alternate earlier this year, and he later became the first actor to play both Hamilton and Aaron Burr in two separate performances on the same day.

With book, music, and lyrics by Miranda, direction by Thomas Kail, choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler, and music direction and orchestrations by Alex Lacamoire, Hamilton is based on Ron Chernow's biography of Founding Father Alexander Hamilton. The musical tells the story of Alexander Hamilton, an immigrant from the West Indies who became George Washington's right-hand man during the Revolutionary War, and was the new nation's first treasury secretary. The musical won 11 Tony Awards including Best Musical, Score, Book of a Musical, Direction of a Musical, Choreography, and Orchestrations.
