With music and lyrics by Sondheim and book by Lapine, the revival of Sunday in the Park With George is directed by Sarna Lapine, who helmed a concert production of the show at New York City Center in October 2016. Gyllenhaal and Ashford reprise their performances as Georges Seurat and Dot in this fully staged mounting.

The musical imagines the life of Georges Seurat in the months leading up to the completion of his most famous painting, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. Consumed by his need to "finish the hat," Seurat alienates the French bourgeoisie, spurns his fellow artists, and neglects his lover, Dot, not realizing that his actions will reverberate over the next 100 years.
