Amiri Baraka to Participate in Tennessee Williams Festival

Poet, playwright, and activist Amiri Baraka, a.k.a. LeRoi Jones, will be a special guest at the second annual Tennessee Williams Festival in Provincetown, MA September 27-30.

Baraka is the author of the seminal 1964 play Dutchman, which was revived Off-Broadway last season. He also wrote the play The Slave as well as numerous poems and essays. He will share his vision of Tennessee Williams as forever provocative and political.

The four-day festival features Williams’ work in various genres including film, dance, poetry, photography, music, and plays. This year’s focus is on Williams’ largely unknown pieces, and will include the world premiere of his short unpublished play, Sun Burst, written in 1980, paired with The One Exception, a text completed by Williams in January 1983, a few weeks before his death. Additional highlights include new work created especially for the festival by a wide range of artists inspired by Williams, and a focus on the role of women in Williams’ work.
