Recipients Announced for 2017 Equity Jeff Awards

Chicago productions of ”Sweeney Todd”, ”Smokey Joe’s Café”, and more have been honored.

Recipients of the 49th Annual Equity Jeff Awards were announced at a gala event held at Drury Lane Theatre on November 6. Notable winners included Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street at Paramount Theatre, which led the evening with five awards, and Paramount Theatre Disney’s The Little Mermaid, which also received three awards.

The award for Production-Play-Large went to Court Theatre's Blues for an Alabama Sky, with director Ron O.J. Parson also taking home an award. Court Theatre also received two awards for Man in the Ring, to playwright Michael Cristofer and for Sound Design-Large to André Pluess. Remy Bumppo Theatre Company's Born Yesterday received the award Production-Play-Midsize, and its production of Pygmalion also received an award for Kristy Leigh Hall's Costume Design-Midsize.

Production-Musical-Midsize went to Porchlight Music Theatre’s The Scottsboro Boys with the Production-Revue award going to Drury Lane Productions' Smokey Joe’s Café.

In addition, a Special Award was presented to Steve Scott, honoring his career achievements that have inspired artistic collaboration, educational outreach and demonstrated dramatic creativity for more than 37 years.

The Equity Awards ceremony was directed by Michael Weber, with music direction by Linda Madonia and stage management by Colleen Tovar. Jack Phillips served as producer for the evening. Actors Mierka Girten and Anish Jethmalani emceed the event.
