Performances of The House That Will Not Stand begin tonight at Victory Gardens Biograph Theatre.

Inspired by Federico García Lorca’s The House of Bernarda Alba, the show follows a woman named Beatrice and her three daughters. It’s the early 1800s in New Orleans, and free women of color are allowed to enter into common-law marriages with rich white men. Through these means, Beatrice has not only built a life for herself and her daughters, but has become one of the wealthiest women in the city. Everything begins to unravel, however, after the mysterious death of her husband. Under the weight of secrets and money, the household starts to disintegrate as everyone fights to survive.

Artistic director Chay Yew directs the show, which was written by Marcus Gardley, ensemble playwright. The cast features Linda Bright Clay as La Veuve, Diana Coates as Agnès Albans, Aneisa Hicks as Odette Albans, Angela Alise as Maude Lynn Albans, Lizan Mitchell as Beatrice Albans, Penelope Walker as Marie-Josephine, and Jacqueline Williams as Makeda.

Performances will run through July 10.
