The Alley Theatre's world premiere production of Describe the Night begins performances tonight at the Quintero Theatre at the University of Houston.

The play by Rajiv Joseph (Gruesome Playground Injuries) is described as follows: "In 1920, the Russian writer Isaac Babel wanders the countryside with the Red Cavalry. Seventy years later, a mysterious KGB agent spies on a woman in Dresden and falls in love. In 2010, an aircraft carrying most of the Polish government crashes in the Russian city of Smolensk. Rajiv Joseph…returns to the Alley with his epic new play Describe the Night which traces the stories of seven men and women connected by history, myth and conspiracy theories.''

Giovanna Sardelli directs the cast of Jason Babinsky (Vova), Jeffrey Bean (Isaac), Elizabeth Bunch (Mariya), Melissa Pritchett (Urzula), Liv Rooth (Yevgenia), Stephen Stocking (Feliks), and Todd Waite (Nikolai).

The creative team includes Tim Mackabee (scenic design), Amy Clark (costume design), and Lap Chi Chu (lighting design). Original music composition and sound design is by Daniel Kluger. Lori Lundquist is the stage manager and Rachel Dooley-Harris the assistant stage manager.

Performances continue through October 15.

The production will have its New York premiere at the Atlantic Theater Company, November 10.
