News of a Jesus Christ Superstar Tour in the US Comes in the Wake of Postponements in the UK

A joint statement from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Really Useful Group and AEG Live explaining the postponement of the UK tour of Jesus Christ Superstar revealed that plans for a US tour are in the works. The press release states that the rescheduling comes as a result of unspecified “circumstances beyond their control,” involving the high demands across the globe “with tours in Australia, Europe and USA to be announced soon.”

In the meantime, the UK tour, which was originally scheduled to begin in March, has been pushed to October. Despite this delay, however, Jesus Christ Superstar cast members Tim Minchin (Judas) and Melanie Chisholm (Mary Magdalene) still plan to perform at the Whatsonstage.com Awards Concert on February 17 at the West End’s Palace Theatre.

Jesus Christ Superstar is a rock opera loosely adapted from the accounts written in the Gospels, that charts the last week of Jesus’ life. With music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice, the show premiered on Broadway in 1971 and made its way to the West End a year later in 1972. In addition to Minchin and Chisholm, the current UK touring cast features Chris Moyles (King Herod), Ben Forster (Jesus), Alex Hanson (Pilate), Pete Gallagher (Caiaphas), Gerard Bentall (Annas), Michael Pickering (Peter), and Giovanni Spano (Simon Zealotes). Headed by director Laurence Connor, the production features sets by Mark Fisher and lighting by Patrick Woodroffe.
