Judi Dench and Danny Boyle Among Winners of the 2012 Evening Standard Theatre Awards

Dame Judi Dench, Danny Boyle, Sweeney Todd and more named London’s best.

The winners of the 2012 Evening Standard Theatre Awards were announced on Sunday, November 25 at London’s Savoy Hotel. The awards honor the best in British theater.

Oscar and Tony Award winner Judi Dench (Skyfall) received Moscow Art Theatre’s Golden Seagull Award for her contribution to world theater; Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire) was given the Beyond Theatre award for putting together the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics; and Tony winner Nicholas Hytner (The History Boys) received the Lebedev Special Award for his artistic directorship of the National Theatre, as well as being named Best Director for the National’s recent production of Shakespeare’s Timon of Athens.

Among other winners, the recent West End production of Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler’s Sweeney Todd was named Best Musical; Nick Payne (If There Is, I Haven’t Found It Yet) won the Best Play award for Constellations, and Tony Award nominee Simon Russell Beale (Monty Python’s Spamalot) won Best Actor for his portrayal of Joseph Stalin in Payne’s play.
