Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson to Headline New King Lear Film

Academy Award winners Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson will star in a new film adaptation of Shakespeare's King Lear. Richard Eyre will adapt and direct.

The TV film will be set in a fictionalized present-day England, with Hopkins in the title role and Thompson as Goneril. They're joined by Emily Watson as Regan, Florence Pugh as Cordelia, Jim Broadbent as Earl of Gloucester, Andrew Scott as Edgar, Christopher Eccleston as Oswald, John Macmillan as Edmund, Tobias Menzies as the Duke of Cornwall, Jim Carter as Kent, Anthony Calf as the Duke of Albany, and Karl Johnson as the Fool.

A coproduction of the BBC and Amazon Studios, the film is produced by Noelette Buckley, Colin Callender and Scott Huff of Playground, Sonia Friedman, and Lucy Richer of the BBC. Playground and Sonia Friedman Productions will produce the project alongside Lemaise Pictures Limited for BBC Two.
