Elevator Repair Service, Gob Squad, Wooster Group Set for REDCAT 2012-2013 Season
Los Angeles’ REDCAT, CalArts’ downtown center for contemporary arts and culture, has announced fall 2012 events and major projects for early 2013. Tickets for most events are on sale starting August 14.
REDCAT begins the season with the debut of Gob Squad’s Kitchen (You’ve Never Had It So Good), which blends live video and performance manipulations, from September 20-23. Choreographer Ery Mafri from West Sumatra, Indonesia brings his company Nan Jombang to the stage from October 10-11 and again October 13-14 in a unique blend of chanting, clapping, and body percussion. Ishmael Houston-Jones’ THEM, running November 15-18, is a physical collaboration that looks into the lives of young gay men (written by Dennis Cooper with music composed by Chris Cochrane).
From the Elevator Repair Service Theater in New York comes Gatz, featuring Scott Shepherd in a revelatory enactment of The Great Gatsby. The show will be live November 29-December 9.
The new year begins with hip hop poet and theater artist Marc Bamuthi Joseph and The Living Word Project‘s red, black & GREEN: a blues, January 31-February 3. Tokyo choreographer, dancer, and artist Hiroaki Umeda fires up a digital storm of movement on February 14-16. Finally, The Wooster Group invites Richard Maxwell of New York City Players to direct Early Plays, a new production based on Eugene O’Neill’s early “Glencairn” seafaring plays. The production runs February 20-23.
REDCAT also presents a variety of international musical offerings: voice and piano Duo Alterno (October 2), krautrock pioneers Faust (October 19), world-renowned theremin virtuoso Eric Ross and video artist Mary Ross (November 2), a celebration of musical shape-shifter Raymond Scott (November 9) with former Oingo Boingo guitarist Steve Bartek and his band (including other Oingo Boingo alums) finding new takes on the composer’s early cartoon classics and composer Ego Plum’s ensemble re-envisioning Scott’s farsighted electronica, and masters of Pansori (November 13) Bae, Il-Dong and Kim, Dong-Won. Not listed here are contemporary jazz and SCREAM shows also available for audiences.
Fall Film/Video programs include influential artists Bruce Baillie (September 23-24), James Benning (October 1), Kathy Rose (October 8), Laura Heit (October 15), David Gatten (October 29), Trinh T. Minh-ha (November 8), and Thom Andersen (November 19). Also on the schedule are two multi-screening film festivals: New Chinese Cinema (October 22-23), and Platform International Animation Festival (October 26-28).
Finally, the visual arts field boasts Tony Cokes: Retro (Pop, Terror, Critique) (September 16-November 11), who brings together three ongoing series of videos borrowing and sampling materials from high and low culture, as well as New York-based artist Jordan Wolfson’s (December 2-January 27), whose most recent project presents a new 3D-video installation that weaves together the disparate histories of analog film, animated cartoons, and digital video filmed on location in Paris, New York, and Los Angeles.
