A film version of Gypsy featuring legendary actress and singer Barbra Streisand is one step closer to getting the green light, according to Variety.

The trade newspaper reports that STX Entertainment is in "advanced negotiations" to make a film version, with Oscar winner Barry Levinson (Diner) directing and Streisand starring as Rose. Streisand will produce the film with Joel Silver and his production company Silver Pictures. Richard LaGravenese (The Last Five Years) is writing the script.

Reports of Streisand's involvement with another film version of the classic Jule Styne, Stephen Sondheim, and Arthur Laurents musical have been swirling for a number of years. The project was put into turnaround last fall by Universal Pictures.
