Chloë Grace Moretz will star in an upcoming film version of Hans Christian Andersen's story The Little Mermaid, according to Variety. The script is expected to be penned by Love Actually scribe Richard Curtis. Moretz was seen on the New York stage in 2014 in The Library at The Public Theater.

First published in 1837, The Little Mermaid tells the story of a young woman who is willing to give up her life and identity as a mermaid in order to gain the love of a human prince. There is no indication about how this screen version of the material will compare with other adaptations.

As a property, The Little Mermaid is best known for its 1989 Disney animated screen version, which won Oscars for best song and best score. It was subsequently turned into a Broadway musical, which has gone on to play around the world.

It was originally announced that Sofia Coppola would helm the film, though she departed the production earlier this year.
