According to reports by Variety, three-time Oscar winner Meryl Streep is in talks to join her former Into the Woods family in Disney's Mary Poppins sequel film Mary Poppins Returns. The project would reunite Streep with Blunt (who played the Baker's Wife opposite Streep's Witch) as well as director Rob Marshall, and producers Marc Platt and John DeLuca. Streep and Blunt also appeared together in the film The Devil Wears Prada.

As previously announced, Mary Poppins Returns will star Blunt in the title role along with Hamilton's Lin-Manuel Miranda as Jack, a lamplighter in the mold of Bert. Streep would play the role of Poppins’ cousin, Topsy, a new character that was not part of the original 1964 film. The part would give Streep another chance to show off her vocal chops, as she did in Marshall's Into the Woods adaptation.

Inspired by the stories in P.L. Travers’ seven Mary Poppins novels, Mary Poppins Returns will reportedly take place in Depression-era London and follow a now-grown Jane and Michael Banks, who, along with Michael’s three children, are visited by the enigmatic Mary Poppins following a personal loss. Through her unique magical skills, and with the aid of her friend Jack, she helps the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives.

The film is set for release on December 25, 2018.
