Tom Cruise will play the bad-boy rock star Stacee Jaxx in the film version of the musical Rock of Ages, according to the film’s director, Adam Shankman, who confirmed the casting on the red carpet for the Academy Awards.

Rock of Ages is set at a legendary Hollywood club facing its imminent demise. The score includes the hit songs of iconic rockers Journey, Styx, REO Speedwagon, Foreigner, Pat Benatar, Whitesnake, and many more. The musical’s book is written by Chris D’Arenzio, who will also pen the screenplay with Michael Arndt and Alan Loeb.

Cruise has received Academy Award nominations for his performances in Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire, and Magnolia. Among his many other credits are such iconic films as Risky Business, Top Gun, and the Mission Impossible series.

Shankman directed and choreographed the film version of Hairspray.
