Shakespeare in Love begins performances tonight at The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey. Opening is set for October 14.

Adapted by playwright Lee Hall from the Oscar-winning 1998 film, Shakespeare in Love is described as follows: "This exuberant theatrical 'love letter' is filled with music and a huge cast of colorful characters (and one feisty dog). The play introduces Will Shakespeare as he struggles with writer’s block – and a forbidden romance with the woman who inspires some of his greatest work. An epic Elizabethan extravaganza – it is rousing, funny, and a beautiful homage to love, art and the Bard himself."

Bonnie J. Monte directs a cast led by Jon Barker as William Shakespeare and Whitney Maris Brown as Viola de Lesseps. Completing the ensemble is Ames Adamson, Marcus Dean Fuller, Edmond Genest, Julian Blake Gordon, Ryan Halsaver, Javon Johnson, Spencer Lackey, Garrett Lawson, David H. Littleton, David Andrew Macdonald, Anthony Marble, Quentin McCuiston, Colin McPhillamy, Seamus Mulcahy, Erika Rolfsrud, Aurea Tomeski, Patrick Toon, and Joelle Zazz.

The creative team includes Brian Clinnin (scenic design), Steven Rosen (lighting design), and Nikki Delhomme (costume design).

Live music is directed by Kris Kukul. Julie Foh is the dialect coach, Danielle Liccardo is the period dance consultant, and Rick Sordelet is the fight director. The production stage manager is Denise Cardarelli.

Performances continue through November 12.
