Dee, Henderson, Merkerson, et al. Set for New Federal Theatre Events

The New Federal Theatre will host a free reading of short stories from Amiri Baraka’s new book Tales of the Out and the Gone at 3pm on Sunday, January 28 at the Henry Street Settlement’s Abrons Center (466 Grand Street).

Participants in the reading will include Ruby Dee, Lee Gundersheimer, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Rome Neal, and David Shakes. Baraka is the author of numerous poems, books, and plays including Dutchman, which is currently being revived at the Cherry Lane Theatre, starring Dule Hill and Jennifer Mudge.

On February 7, the New Federal will launch a four-week celebration of the works of Ntozake Shange, best known as the author of For Colored Girls Who Have Considerd Suicide/When the Rainbow Is Enuf. Among its highlights will be a reading of Shange’s adaptation of Bertolt Brecht’s Mother Courage, starring S. Epatha Merkerson, on February 12, and a two-week run of Shange’s one-act play It Hasn’t Always Been This Way, directed and choreographed by Dianne McIntyre, February 21-March 4.
