Delta Burke and Leslie Jordan will star in a film version of Del Shores’ hit comedy Southern Baptist Sissies, to be directed by the author. Filming is expected to begin this spring.

The comedy looks at four boys’ experiences growing up gay in the Baptist Church. In addition to Burke and Jordan, who starred in the show’s recent national tour, the film’s cast will include stage veterans Beth Grant, Dale Dickey, Rosemary Alexander, Scott Presley, Rich Delia, and Newell Alexander. Casting has yet to be announced for the role of “Mark.”
The show won the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Production.

Burke has appeared on Broadway in Steel Magnolias and Thoroughly Modern Millie; she is best known for her work as Suzanne Sugarbaker on CBS’ Designing Women. Jordan, an accomplished stage actor, won the Emmy Award for his role as Beverley Leslie on Will & Grace.

Two of Shores’ previous plays, Daddy’s Dyin’ — Who Got the Will and Sordid Lives, have previously been made into feature films. He also wrote and directed the Showtime feature The Wilde Girls, starring Olivia Newton-John and Swoosie Kurtz.
