Curry, Dench, Menzel, Spacey, et al. Win Whatsonstage Awards

Winners have been announced for the 2007 Whatsonstage.com Theatergoers Choice Awards.

The London production of Wicked took four awards, including Best New Musical, Best Actress in a Musical (Idina Menzel), Best Supporting Actress in a Musical (Miriam Margoyles), and Best Set Designer (Eugene Lee).

The Sound of Music took the awards for Best Musical Revival and star Connie Fisher was also named London Newcomer of the Year. In addition, the reality show that led to Fisher’s casting, How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria, was named Theatre Event of the Year.

The award for Best New Play went to Tom Stoppard’s Rock ‘n’ Roll, Best New Comedy was awarded to The 39 Steps, and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf was named Best Play Revival. The RSC’s production of As You Like It was named Best Shakespearean Production; the Menier Chocolate Factory’s production of Little Shop of Horrors was named Best Off West-End Production, and Me and My Girl was named Best Regional Production.

Other acting awards went to Dame Judi Dench as Best Actress in a Play for Hay Fever, Kevin Spacey for Best Actor in a Play and Colm Meaney for Best Supporting Actor in a Play for A Moon for the Misbegotten, Helen Schlesinger as Best Supporting Actress in a Play for The Crucible; Tim Curry for Best Actor in a Musical and Tom Goodman-Hill for Best Supporting Actor in a Musical for Spamalot, Patrick Stewart for Best Solo Performance for A Christmas Carol, Patrick Swayze for Best Takeover in a Role in Guys and Dolls, and the cast of Avenue Q for Best Ensemble Performance.

Lastly, Trevor Nunn was named Best Director for his work on both Porgy & Bess and Rock ‘n’ Roll, and Rob Ashford was named Best Choreographer for Evita.
