Broadway’s Once Wins Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album

Broadway’s Once took home the golden gramophone last night at the 55th Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, where it was nominated alongside the cast albums of Follies, Newsies, Nice Work If You Can Get It, and The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess.

The award for Once is shared by the stars/principal soloists (Cristin Milioti and Tony Award winner Steve Kazee), producers Steven Epstein & Martin Lowe, and composers/lyricists Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova. The album was produced by Masterworks Broadway.

Last year’s Grammy for a musical theater cast album went to The Book of Mormon. In 2011, the Grammy went to American Idiot, and 2010’s award went to the revival cast album of West Side Story.

“Let Me Be Your Star” from TV’s Broadway-sitcom Smash was nominated for Best Song Written for Visual Media, but was beat out by Taylor Swift and the Civil Wars’ “Safe and Sound,” written for The Hunger Games.
