New York City Opera Production of Ragtime is Postponed Indefinitely

The New York City Opera’s planned production of the musical Ragtime, which had been scheduled to begin performances on April 8, 2008, has been postponed indefinitely.

According to a statement from the company, the postponement is due to unexpected schedule conflicts of Frank Galati and Graciela Daniele, who respectively directed and choreographed the original production of the musical and were to have repeated their duties for the NYCO production. Ragtime will be replaced in the repertory by a musical theater work to be announced shortly. Refunds or exchanges will be available to patrons who have the show as part of their subscription; phone 212-496-0600 for further information.

Ragtime has music by Stephen Flaherty, lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, and a book by Terrence McNally, based on the novel by E.L. Doctorow. After engagements in Toronto and Los Angeles, the show opened on Broadway on January 18, 1998 with a cast headed by Peter Friedman, Mark Jacoby, Marin Mazzie, Audra McDonald, and Brian Stokes Mitchell. It was nominated for 13 Tony Awards and won in four categories, including score, book, and featured actress (McDonald).
