Lauren Bacall, Matthew Broderick, Angela Lansbury, Laura Linney, Donna Murphy, Mandy Patinkin, and Stephen Sondheim join Patti LuPone and company for their opening night.
On Thursday night, the revival of Gypsy bowed to thunderous applause at the St. James Theatre. Taking their curtain call bows were the show’s legendary lyricist, Stephen Sondheim, and librettist and now-director Arthur Laurents.
At the show’s after-party at Mansion, star Patti LuPone, who gives a triumphant performance as Mama Rose, relaxes with husband Matt Johnson and son Josh.
Laura Benanti, who is absolutely brilliant as Gypsy Rose Lee, gets a squeeze from handsome hubby Steven Pasquale.
Three-time Tony Award winner Boyd Gaines, who could easily earn a fourth for his superb portrayal of Rose’s lover Herbie, gets a congratulatory hug from fellow Tony winner Donna Murphy.
Tony Yazbeck, who dazzles as dancer Tulsa, celebrated with his equally talented fiancée, Jessica Lee Goldyn.
Leigh Ann Larkin and Katie Micha are both superb as sister June.
Lenora Nemetz, Alison Fraser, and Marilyn Caskey are the scene-stealing strippers who tell Gypsy “You Gotta Have a Gimmick.”
The opening’s many special guests included the one-and-only Angela Lansbury, who played Rose in the show’s 1974 Broadway revival.
Mandy Patinkin, who starred in Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park With George, has been keeping busy doing concerts around the country.
Here are two men-about-town: Hairspray lyricist Scott Wittman and Tony winner Matthew Broderick.
Laura Linney — who starred with Broderick in the film You Can Count on Me — will return to Broadway this month in the Roundabout Theatre’s revival of Les Liaisons Dangereuses.
Chris Burke played LuPone’s son on the popular ABC-TV series Life Goes On.
Young Hollywood stars (and twins) Peyton and Spencer List will soon be seen on the big screen in Malevolence: Bereavement
Former Seinfeld funny man Wayne Knight was last seen on Broadway in Sweet Charity.
Finally, here’s the legendary Lauren Bacall, who will receive a special tribute from Studio Dante on March 31.
