American Theatre Wing to Honor Channing, Jones, and Tune

The American Theatre Wing will honor Tony Award winners Carol Channing, James Earl Jones, and Tommy Tune at its spring gala, to be held at 6:30pm on Monday, June 4 at Cipriani 42nd Street.

Angela Bassett, Courtney B. Vance, Jerry Herman, and Twiggy will serve as honorary chairs of the event, which will benefit the American Theatre Wing’s continuing efforts in support of theatrical education and excellence.

Channing, recipient of the 1995 Lifetime Achievement Tony Award, is best known for having starred on Broadway in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and Hello, Dolly! She received an Academy Award nomination for her performance in Thoroughly Modern Millie.

Jones has received numerous honors for his work in the theater, including Tony Awards for The Great White Hope and Fences. His most recent Broadway appearance was in the 2005 revival of Ernest Thompson’s On Golden Pond.

Tune is the winner of nine Tony Awards; his credits as a director/choreographer include The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, A Day in Hollywood/A Night in the Ukraine, My One and Only (in which he co-starred with Twiggy), Grand Hotel, and The Will Rogers Follies.
