Oscar winner Whoopi Goldberg will read August Wilson’s monologue “Janitor” at 10am on Friday, April 27 in Bryant Park in honor of what would have been the late playwright’s 62nd birthday.

As part of what has been deemed “August Wilson Day” by the League of American Theatres and Producers, Goldberg — who starred in the Broadway revival of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom — will be joined by Wilson’s widow, Constanza Romero, Harry Lennix and Tonya Pinkins, the stars of the current Broadway production of Wilson’s Radio Golf, and actress Tamara Tunie, who is one of that show’s producers.

Other events that will be part of the celebration include a daylong reading of poetry in the Bryant Park Reading Room, special seminars and speeches, and the opportunity for over 300 New York City school students to study “Janitor” in the classroom.
