Twyla Tharp to Receive I.A.L. Diamond Award for Achievement in the Arts on May 1

Director/choreographer Twyla Tharp will be presented with the 2010 I.A.L. Diamond Award for Achievement in the Arts from Columbia University on Saturday, May 1 in a private ceremony. Tharp is a 1963 graduate of Columbia’s Barnard College.

Tharp is currently represented on Broadway with Come Fly Away, playing at the Marquis Theatre.

She won Tony and Drama Desk Awards for her choreography of Movin’ Out, for which she was also nominated as a director. She also directed and choreographed the Broadway productions of The Times They Are A Changin’ and Singin’ in the Rain.

Tharp is also the recipient of two Emmy Awards, the 2004 National Medal of the Arts, the Astaire Award, and the Drama League Award for Sustained Achievement in Musical Theater, among other honors.
