Second Stage Theatre will open its 2014 Uptown Series at the McGinn/Cazale Theatre with the New York premiere of American Hero, written by Bess Wohl and directed by Leigh Silverman. The cast will feature Ari Graynor (The Performers), Daoud Heidami (Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo), Jerry O'Connell (Seminar), and Erin Wilhelmi (The Great God Pan).

The play follows three up-and-coming "sandwich artists" — a teenager, a single mom, and a downsized refugee from corporate banking — at a toasted-sub franchise as their shot at the American dream is interrupted by a series of strange events. The three form an unlikely alliance in their post-recession world, setting the stage for Wohl's dark comedy about "life, liberty, and the pursuit of sandwiches."

American Hero includes scenic design by Dane Laffrey, costumes by Clint Ramos, lighting design by Jen Schriever, and sound design by Jill BC Du Boff.

Performances begin May 12 in advance of a May 22 opening.
