2004-2005 Tony Award Nominations Announced

The nominations for the 2004-2005 Tony Awards were announced this morning at the Mariott Marquis hotel by actors Alan Cumming, Lynn Redgrave, Kate Burton, and Brian Stokes Mitchell.

Monty Python’s Spamalot, the hit musical based on the film Monty Python and the Holy Grail, scored the most nominations with 14. Among the shows completely shut out of the nominations are The Glass Menagerie, Steel Magnolias, The Frogs, All Shook Up, Brooklyn The Musical, and Good Vibrations. The nominees for Best Play include Democracy and Gem of the Ocean, two shows that have closed.

The awards ceremony — hosted for the third consecutive year by Hugh Jackman, winner of last year’s Best Actor in a Musical award for his performance in The Boy From Oz — will be held at Radio City Music Hall on Sunday, June 5, and broadcast live on CBS television from 8pm to 11pm. In addition to the above nominees in competitive categories, it has been announced that this year’s Regional Theatre Tony Award will go to Theatre de la Jeune Lune of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and that a Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre will go to Edward Albee, author of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and many other plays.
