Stephanie J. Block, Tituss Burgess, et al. Set for Birdland in July

As previously announced, 9 to 5 star Stephanie J. Block will celebrate the release of her debut album This Place I Know
at Birdland on July 13 at 7 pm. She will be joined on stage by an array of award-winning musical theatre songwriters. The evening is part of the award-winning concert series Broadway at Birdland, presented by Jim Caruso’s Cast Party.

The CD features collaborations with award-winning songwriters, including Dolly Parton who duets with Block on her 1974 classic, “I Will Always Love You”; Marvin Hamlisch, who accompanies and arranges his own “Smart Women”; Stephen Schwartz, who accompanies her on “Making Good”; and Stephen Flaherty, who plays piano for the recording premiere of his “Something Beautiful.” The album also features collaborations with Deborah Abramson, Scott Alan, Zina Goldrich, Marcy Heisler, Andrew Lippa, Paul Loesel, Steve Marzullo, and Claude-Michel Schonberg.

July events will also include Lew Tabackin and Toshiko Akiyoshi Quartet (July 1-4); Dominick Farinacci (July 6); Steve Kuhn Quartet, featuring Joe Lovano (sax) David Finck (bass) Billy Drummond (drums) (July 7); Tim Hagans Quintet, featuring Marc Copland (piano), John Abercrombie (guitar), Billy Hart (drums) & Drew Gress (bass) (July 8-11); Frank Kimbrough Trio, featuring Paul Motian (drums) and Jay Anderson (bass) (July 14); Louis Hayes Quintet (July 15-18); The Marcy & Zina Show with Marcy Heisler and Zina Goldrich (July 20); Cathy Rocco (July 21); Lee Konitz Quartet featuring Paul Motian (July 22-25); Broadway veteran Tituss Burgess & The Tight-Ass Band (July 27); and the Lou Donaldson Quartet (July 29-August 1).

In addition, Birdland will present its regular monthly engagements of The Andy Farber Big Band (featuring Hilary Kole), Chico O’Farrill’s Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra, and 2009 MAC Award winner Jim Caruso’s “Cast Party.”
