The musical Fela! will return to Broadway for a summer run. The show, directed and choreographed by Bill T. Jones, with a book by Jim Lewis and Jones, will perform at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre, July 9-August 4 with an opening on July 12.

Fela! is about Fela Anikulapo-Kuti’s controversial life as artist, political activist, and revolutionary musician. The musical was conceived by Jones, Jim Lewis and Stephen Hendel, features additional lyrics by Jim Lewis, and additional music by Aaron Johnson and Jordan McLean. It is inspired by the authorized biography, Fela: This Bitch of a Life by Carlos Moore.

Original Tony nominated star Sahr Ngaujah will once again perform the title role in the musical. He is joined by Melanie Marshall and Paulette Ivory. The world renowned Antibalas and other members of the NYC Afrobeat community, under the direction of Aaron Johnson, will again perform Kuti’s rousing music live onstage.

This return New York engagement is part of the show’s world tour, which will continue with stops in Australia, Japan, a return to Africa, a reprise engagement at Los Angeles’ Ahmanson in May 2013 followed by the Chekov Festival (Moscow, Russia) in June 2013 and numerous other cities around the world still to be announced.
