Enchanted April, Matthew Barber’s play based on Elizabeth von Arnim’s novel, will close on August 31 after having played 24 previews and 144 regular performances at Broadway’s Belasco Theatre.

The show, about a group of women bonding amidst wisteria and sunshine in an Italian castle was directed by Michael Wilson and features scenic design by Tony Straiges, lighting design by Rui Rita, and costume design by Jess Goldstein. Enchanted April currently features Jane Adams in the role originated by Molly Ringwald, who left the production several weeks ago due to her pregnancy. The other co-stars are Elizabeth Ashley, Jayne Atkinson (who received a Tony Award nomination for her performance), Patricia Conolly, Michael Cumpsty, Dagmara Dominczyk, Daniel Gerroll, and Michael Hayden.

In his review of the show for TheaterMania, David Finkle wrote: “At best, there’s a wan charm to this under-budgeted production….Given the high expectations raised by a dramatized version of von Arnim’s satisfying exercise in resuscitated love, it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to say that April is the cruelest month.”
