Whoopi Goldberg to Temporarily Join Xanadu on July 29

Whoopi Goldberg will take over the role of Calliope in the musical Xanadu, July 29-September 7. She will temporarily replace Jackie Hoffman, who will be focusing on the release of her new CD Jackie Hoffman Live from Joe’s Pub, and who will return to the show on September 9.

Goldberg received a Drama Desk and Theatre World Award for her 1985 Broadway solo show Whoopi Goldberg. She has also starred on Broadway in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, and another solo show Whoopi. She has won numerous awards during her career including the Emmy, Grammy, Golden Globe, as well as the Academy Award for Ghost, and is currently a co-host of The View. She also hosted the 2008 Tony Awards.

Xanadu, based on the 1980 film of the same name, is directed by Christopher Ashley, and features a book by Douglas Carter Beane and a score by Jeff Lynne and John Farrar.
