The Broadway production of The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, which had previously announced an extension through September 30, will now close on September 23.

The musical’s cast is led by Audra McDonald (Bess), Norm Lewis (Porgy) and David Alan Grier (Sporting Life).

The cast also features Phillip Boykin (Crown), Nikki Renée Daniels (Clara), Joshua Henry (Jake), Christopher Innvar (Detective), Bryonha Marie Parham (Serena) and NaTasha Yvette Williams (Mariah). Additionally the cast includes: Sumayya Ali, Allison Blackwell, Roosevelt André Credit, Trevon Davis, Joseph Dellger, Wilkie Ferguson III, Carmen Ruby Floyd, Gavin Gregory, Heather Hill, David Hughey, Andrea Jones-Sojola, Alicia Hall Moran, Cedric Neal, Phumzile Sojola, Nathaniel Stampley, Julius Thomas III, J.D. Webster and Lisa Nicole Wilkerson.

Directed by Diane Paulus, choreographed by Ronald K. Brown, and featuring an adaptation by Suzan-Lori Parks and Deidre L. Murray, the show is set in Charleston’s fabled Catfish Row, where the beautiful Bess struggles to break free from her scandalous past, and the only one who can rescue her is the crippled but courageous Porgy.

The new closing date has been set to make room for the next engagement at the Rodgers, which will begin on October 4, 2012.
