Adepero Oduye, star of the Sundance film Pariah, will make her Broadway debut in Horton Foote’s The Trip to Bountiful, beginning July 16. She will be taking over the role of Thelma from Tony Award nominee Condola Rashad who will be playing the role of Juliet, opposite Orlando Bloom, in the upcoming Broadway production of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

In addition to Oduye, the cast features 2013 Tony Award winner Cicely Tyson, Cuba Gooding, Jr., Vanessa Williams, and Tom Wopat.

The Trip to Bountiful is the story of an elderly woman named Carrie Watts (Tyson) who longs to return to her hometown of Bountiful, Texas. She leaves on her journey against the wishes of her overprotective son (Gooding) and his bossy wife (Williams). Along the way, she meets a girl (Oduye) with whom she reminisces about her past.

The production is currently playing the Stephen Sondheim Theatre and has extended its run through October 9. Michael Wilson (Gore Vidal’s The Best Man) directs.
