Tom Stoppard’s Rock ‘N’ Roll Extends Through November 5 in London; David Calder to Replace Brian Cox

Tom Stoppard’s critically acclaimed drama Rock ‘N’ Roll has extended its booking at the Duke of York’s Theatre in London for another six weeks and is now scheduled to close on November 5. Discussions are underway for a Broadway production of the play.

Directed by Trevor Nunn, Rock ‘N” Roll stars Sinéad Cusack, Alice Eve, Brian Cox, and Rufus Sewell. On September 26, David Calder will replace Cox in the role of Max. Calder’s stage credits include Five Gold Rings, The Little Foxes, and Home.

Rock ‘N” Roll premiered at the Royal Court before transferring to the West End last month. The play spans the years 1968 to 1990 from the double perspective of Prague, where a rock ‘n’ roll band comes to symbolize resistance to the Communist regime, and Cambridge, England, where the verities of love and death shape the lives of three generations in the family of a Marxist philosopher.

Stoppard is the author of such plays as The Real Thing, Jumpers, and The Invention of Love. His recent, three-part work The Coast of Utopia will be staged this season at Lincoln Center Theater, and San Francisco’s A.C.T. will open its season with a production of Stoppard’s Travesties.
