Actor Edwin C. Owens Dies at 64

Veteran actor Edwin C. Owens died of heart failure on Monday, September 16 in Fort Worth, Texas while on the road in the national tour of On Golden Pond, in which he understudied Tom Bosley in the role of Norman Thayer. He was 64.

Owens played Dr. Baugh and understudied Ned Beatty as Big Daddy in the 2003 Broadway revival of Cat On A Hot Tin Roof. He had previously appeared on Broadway in such shows as the 2002 production of Fortune’s Fool, in which he played Trembinsky and understudied both Alan Bates and Frank Langella; the 1999 revival of Death of a Salesman, in which he understudied Howard Witt as Charley; and The Changing Room (1973), in which he succeeded John Lithgow in the role of “Kenny” Kendal.

Off-Broadway, Owens was seen earlier this season in the Primary Stages production of Charles Grodin’s The Right Kind of People and the Irish Repertory Theatre production of Brian Friel’s Philadelphia, Here I Come! His regional credits include Misalliance, Julius Caesar, Summer and Smoke, Shadowlands, and Spinning Into Butter.

He appeared in such films as Regarding Henry and Blood Brothers, and on television in such shows as As The World Turns, General Hospital, Law & Order, Married…With Children, Falcon Crest, and Hill Street Blues.
