Richards, who died on June 29 at age 87, directed the original Broadway production of Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin In The Sun and the premieres of such August Wilson works as Seven Guitars, Fences, The Piano Lesson, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, and Two Trains Running.

Brian Stokes Mitchell, Charles Dutton, Mary Alice, Cicely Tyson, Ming Cho Lee, Ruby Dee, Avery Brooks, Courtney Vance, and Frankie Faison are scheduled to speak at the memorial. Angela Bassett and Lawrence Fishburne will also be in attendance; they have recorded a special tribute to Richards, as has Sidney Poitier.
