Sarah Benson Named Artistic Director of Soho Rep

Sarah Benson has been named artistic director of Soho Rep, the award-winning downtown theater company. Benson, who has been the associate artistic director there for the past two years, succeeds Daniel Aukin, who announced in May that he would leave the company to pursue freelance opportunities as a director.

Benson, a native of the United Kingdom, is the recipient of a Fulbright Award. In addition to her work at Soho Rep, she has helmed the Prelude Festival for the past two seasons. In 2008, Benson will curate a new festival of contemporary American theater in Edinburgh, Scotland.

The company was founded in 1975, and its productions have won numerous Obie Awards. Among Soho Rep’s more recent shows are [sic], Suitcase, and Peninsula. Its next production will be Adam Bock’s The Thugs, which begins performances on October 5 at its regular home at 46 Walker Street.
