Mark Jacoby Joins Cast of NYCO’s The Pirates of Penzance

Broadway star Mark Jacoby will play the role of the Major-General in the New York City Opera’s new production of Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance, which will run March 3-31 and will open officially on March 7 at the New York State Theater at Lincoln Center.

A co-production with Glimmerglass Opera, The Pirates of Penzance will be directed by Lillian Groag and conducted by Gerald Steichen, with choreography by Lynne Hockney. The design team is headed by John Conklin (sets), Jess Goldstein (costumes), and Pat Collins (lighting).

The operetta will also star Marc Kudisch as The Pirate King, Sarah Jane McMahon as Mabel, Myrna Paris as Ruth, Matt Morgan as Frederic, and Kevin Burdette as the Sergeant of Police. Additional casting will be announced shortly.

Jacoby is currently playing Julian Marsh in the Walnut Street Theatre’s production of 42nd Street. He received a Tony Award nomination for his performance in Harold Prince’s revival of Show Boat; his other Broadway credits include Sweeney Todd, Ragtime, Grand Hotel, Man of La Mancha, Sweet Charity, and The Phantom of the Opera, in which he played the title role for three years. More recently, he appeared in the Barrington Stage Company production of Mame and The Walnut Street Theatre production of Windy City.
