A co-production of Heiner Müller’s Macbeth after Shakespeare, presented by the Mini teater (Ljubljana, Slovenia) and Novo kazalište Zagreb (Croatia), will make its North American premiere at La MaMa E.T.C.’s Ellen Stewart Theatre, December 8-11. Ivica Buljan will direct.

In Müller’s version of Macbeth, crimes follow one another with increasing speed and the monologues are radically shortened. No one is presented in a positive light. For example, in the instructions at the beginning of the third scene, even King Duncan is sitting on a heap of corpses arranged in the shape of a throne. Macbeth is a bloody tyrant merely continuing the work of some other bloody tyrant. This adaptation was translated from the German by Milan Štefe.

The cast will be led by Marko Mandic, and including Milena Zupancic, Polona Vetrih, Jurij Drevenšek, Jure Henigman, Jose, Stipe Kostanic, Domen Valic, Anže Zevnik.

The creative team will also include Ana Savic Gecan (costume design), son: DA (set design), Mitja Vrhovnik Smrekar (composer), and Tanja Zgonc (choreographer).
