Annie Baker and Rajiv Joseph Honored at the 2013 Steinberg Playwright Awards

The honorary playwrights offered samples of their upcoming work during the evening’s festivities.

Playwrights Annie Baker and Rajiv Joseph were honored last evening by the 2013 Harold and Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust at the Steinberg Playwright Awards, held at Lincoln Center Theater's Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater. Playwright David Henry Hwang was also honored; last year's event, at which he would have been presented with the 2012 Steinberg Distinguished Playwright Award, was canceled because of Hurricane Sandy.

Steinberg Playwright Awards Advisory Committee member and Artistic Director of New Dramatists Todd London offered the opening remarks, followed by a series of presentations of the playwrights' work. Bradley Fong and Cole Horibe presented a scene from Hwang's new play, Kung Fu, which is set for a world premiere at Signature Theatre in February 2014. Baker offered an excerpt from The Flick, featuring members of its original Playwrights Horizons cast, including Alex Hanna, Louisa Krause, Matthew Maher, and Aaron Clifton Moten. Joseph previewed his new play Guards at the Taj, performed by Omar Metwally and Arian Moayed.

Additional guests included multiple Tony-winning costume designer William Ivey Long (Big Fish), Tony-winning director Pam MacKinnon (Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?), playwright Joshua Harmon, actresses Lesli Margherita (Matilda) and Molly Ranson (Bad Jews), and actors Stephen Carrasco (Kinky Boots), Michael Zegen (Bad Jews), and Philip Ettinger (Bad Jews).
