Gypsy of the Year Raises Over $3 Milllion

The 20th annual Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS’s Gypsy of the Year competition at the New Amsterdam Theatre was held on Monday, December 8 at 4:30pm and Tuesday, December 9 at 2pm. The event culminates a six-week fundraising effort, which netted a grand total of $3,061,000.

The event was hosted by Seth Rudetsky, and there were performances by 16 current Broadway and Off-Broadway shows, including a special presentation from Hairspray featuring Mary Bond Davis, Jenifer Lewis, Darlene Love, Harvey Fierstein, Marissa Jaret Winokur, and Matthew Morrison.

The award for Best Onstage Performance went to the cast of The Lion King for a dazzling modern dance sequence, while the first-runner up was the cast of Equus, including star Daniel Radcliffe, who wrote an original song for the event.

Top fundraisers included the Chicago cast of Jersey Boys ($220,000), the Broadway cast of Equus ($203,746), the Chicago company of Wicked ($178,500), the Broadway cast of Wicked ($172, 301), and the Los Angeles company of Wicked ($161,868).

The event also included special appearances by Tony Award winner Tyne Daly and Jonathan Hadary, who hosted the first event in 1989, Jen Cody and Don Richard as Urinetown‘s Little Sally and Officer Lockstock, and the cast of [title of show].
