Josephine and I, a new solo drama by The River star Cush Jumbo, celebrated its opening night at Joe's Pub at the Public Theater on March 10. The production, which premiered at London's Bush Theatre in 2013, is directed by Phyllida Lloyd (Mary Stuart, Mamma Mia!).

Josephine and I explores the life of Josephine Baker, from her birth in the St. Louis slums to her rise as one of the most important stars of the 20th century. The first African-American performer to climb to international prominence, she was a French Resistance spy and civil rights activist who was married twice by age 16 and served as a muse to Pablo Picasso, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Ernest Hemingway, who called her "the most sensational woman anyone ever saw." Josephine and I also tells the story of how, nearly 40 years after her death, Baker’s life inspires a young woman to face up to the sacrifices required to follow one’s dreams.

Guests at the opening night festivities included Oscar winner Anne Hathaway (Grounded), Tony winner Janet McTeer (Mary Stuart), and Tony nominee Fiona Shaw (The Testament of Mary), among others. Check out TheaterMania's photos in the gallery below.
