Flashback Friday: Broadway-Bound Misery Gave Kathy Bates First Hollywood Acceptance Speech

Could it bring Broadway noob Bruce Willis a Tony?

Hollywood action star Bruce Willis will soon make his Broadway debut in a stage adaptation of Misery, based on the acclaimed novel by Stephen King. We hope the stage version brings Willis as much Broadway success as the 1990 movie brought Kathy Bates. She was largely unknown before taking on her Oscar-winning role as Annie Wilkes. (Elizabeth Marvel will play the role in the stage version.) As we prepare to welcome Willis, we look back at Bates' moving acceptance speech — and wince when we think about having to watch that ankle scene live.
