Flashback Friday: LaChanze Accepts a Tony Award for Playing Celie in The Color Purple

As the revival opens on Broadway, we look back at one of the stars of the original 2006 production.

The Broadway revival of The Color Purple opened last night at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre, with Jennifer Hudson, Danielle Brooks, and Cynthia Erivo in the starring roles of Shug Avery, Sofia, and Celie, respectively. When the original production hit Broadway in 2005, those roles were played by Elisabeth Withers-Mendes, Felicia P. Fields, and LaChanze, who won a Tony for her performance.
