Diane Lane and Tony Shalhoub will star in the Lincoln Center Theater production of Bathsheba Doran's The Mystery of Love and Sex, to be directed by Sam Gold, at the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater. The new play begins performances February 5 and opens March 2.

The Mystery of Love and Sex tells the story of Charlotte and Jonny, a pair of longtime friends and college students whose relationship turns romantic, despite the objections of Charlotte's parents, played by Lane and Shalhoub. Gayle Rankin (Cabaret) plays Charlotte, with Mamoudou Athie (generations) as Jonny.

This production marks Lane's return to the New York stage for the first time in 37 years. An Academy Award nominee for her performance in the film Unfaithful, her theatrical credits include productions of Elizabeth Swados' Runaways, The Cherry Orchard, and Agamemnon at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre, and Sweet Bird of Youth at the Goodman Theatre. Shalhoub's association with Lincoln Center Theater includes the plays Act One and Golden Boy.

Doran is the author of the plays Kin and Parent's Evening, among many others. She is currently a writer and producer for the Showtime series Masters of Sex, and has written for Boardwalk Empire and Smash.

Gold is the director of the current Broadway revival of Tom Stoppard's The Real Thing and of the upcoming Broadway premiere of Lisa Kron and Jeanine Tesori's Fun Home. The Mystery of Love and Sex will feature sets by Andrew Lieberman, costumes by Kaye Voyce, lighting by Jane Cox, and original music and sound by Daniel Kluger.
