The American Theatre Wing has announced the recipients of its 2016 National Theatre Company Grants. The prestigious grants, totaling $120,000, will be presented on October 17 at a private event.

This year’s seven initial support recipients are American Blues Theater (Chicago), Bedlam (New York), Chance Theater (Anaheim, California), Classical Theatre Company (Houston), Cygnet Theatre Company (San Diego), South of Broadway Theatre Company (Charleston, South Carolina), and Yellow Tree Theatre (Osseo, Minnesota). The inaugural second time support grant recipients are the following five companies: 16th Street Theater (Berwyn, Illinois), 1812 Productions (Philadelphia), Golden Thread Productions (San Francisco), Portland Playhouse (Portland, Oregon), and Synchronicity Theatre (Atlanta).

Initial Support grants for the 2016 cycle in the amount of $10,000 each will be distributed for general operating support to these companies which, according to grant guidelines, "have been in operation at least five, but not more than fifteen years; have articulated a distinctive mission; cultivated an audience; and nurtured a community of artists in ways that strengthen and demonstrate the quality, diversity, and dynamism of American theater."
